Sunday - Show Day
Sunday started around 5:30 for the
swap meet crew and 6:00 the rest of us began to show up to get
everything ready for our awaited guest. Registration got them
organized, while the parking guys pointed out the dog poop to the
park workers. There was a dog show at the park on Saturday, and
they didn't do a good job cleaning their mess. I didn't get any
reports of drive-overs or walk-throughs, so they must have gotten
it picked up in time.
This year there was more time allowed
for voting, to allow everybody a chance to look the cars over
without being rushed. There were 201 GTO's to look at this year.
It seemed to work out better even though it put the ballot crew in
a narrower time frame.
The Valve Cover races once again were
a big hit with the crowd. There were 20 entries this year, and we
used the double elimination format to determine the winner. The
lights worked better this year, using tape on the chrome racers,
but the sun bothered us a couple of times. Once again, it came to
a Micetic duel. This time Carolyn would be the victor, as she went
into the final race against Kirk Barrick to come out as
"Queen of the Hill". That should end their family feud
back at home, for now they both have a trophy.
Tom Goad would give us a talk on the
last years of the GTO and some of the things they were doing at
the time to keep it alive. He answered questions from the crowd,
even though he didn't know if they would ever make another GTO,
since he retired in 1994. Tom was also good enough to bring out
his 1973 LeMans station wagon with the GTO hood. This car was used
as a prototype, with a 455 engine, to possibly bring out a GTO
station wagon. Tom was allowed to buy this car once it was put
back to a LeMans.
Other invited guest were Richard King
and his students from Warren Mott H.S. and their 1965 GTO that
they did a restoration to, which took a first place at Autorama
this year. Michael Sedlak and his 1964 Grey Ghost. Herb Addams, to
compete on the road course, built this car. Mike still races the
car at the Meadow Brook Nostalgic Races. Bob Churchan brought out
the Roseville Police Dare Car, a 1966 GTO. Everyone enjoyed seeing
these cars on display.
The weather was great all day, and
everyone who attended had a good time.
