This year marked the 6th year for the world famous Woodward DreamCruise. Through a lot
of careful planning with both Pontiac Motor Division and the City of Pontiac, the Woodward
GTO Tigers were able to reserve 200 spaces in Pontiac for GTOs. With our area pre-sold
nearly a month before, we wished we could have had even more spaces. This fantastic event
was a wonderful tie in to our GTO Classic Weekend. It went over so well that several of
the local newspapers and one major TV station included the special display in their
publications and live telecasts.
The Woodward DreamCruise is a yearly event that attracts people from all over the
world. This year it was estimated that over 1.5 million people attended the event, and
30-40,000 classic or modified vehicles. The cruise strip runs from 8 Mile Road (the
Detroit border) all the way to the city of Pontiac, which is about 15 miles. Considering
the fact that Woodward is four lanes wide, this makes for a huge cruise area. Watching the
roadside crowds is somewhat exciting, and viewing the cool GM, Ford and Chrysler displays
and large billboards gives a hint of Detroit Autoshow presence.
Originally set up as a cruise that would take you from city to city collecting plaques,
the event is now so large, trying to accomplish this task would be nearly impossible. In
the areas between 9 Mile and 16 Mile, traffic is typically stopped during the actual day
of the cruise (though on the northern end where we were it was clear sailing). Many
out-of-towners cruised throughout the weeknights when traffic was lighter.
As for the GTO crowd, it seemed like everyone had a fantastic time. GTOs were coming
and going all day. Where else could you see a blown GTO doing a gigantic burnout in public
and get pulled over by the police only to get off with a warning. Believe it or not, this
same wild-man ended up winning the Best of Show award the next day!
Great cars, great weather, good food and lots of cruisin. Thats what the
DreamCruise offered this year, and what better place to be than the MOTOR CITY!
